Anita Jean Bauer, a long-time resident of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2018.

Born on March 20, 1930 in Martinsburg, West Virginia, she grew up on a farm with her younger siblings, Pauline Ellis, Ramona Smith, the late Edgar Hess, Albert Hess, and the late Anne Wise. She was the daughter of Allen and Florence Amelia Hess.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur S. Bauer, a well respected family and ear, nose and throat physician, in 1981. She was also predeceased by her oldest son, Larry Bauer, in May 2017.

For over 50 years, Anita was active in volunteering in a variety of capacities with Memorial Hospital and its successor, Western Maryland Health System. Anita was a member and served multiple officer positions of the local women’s medical auxiliary. Her passion was serving as a loyal volunteer at the hospital gift shop for over 30 years. At the gift shop, her always smiling face welcomed the doctors, hospital workers and the families and guests of the patients.

Anita devoted herself to raising her family of 4 boys, 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She loved cooking family dinners, hosting holiday dinners serving everyone’s favorite desserts, and opening her home annually to the gift shop volunteers for a holiday gathering.

Anita was a member of Beth Jacob Synagogue and Ber Chayim Temple.

Anita is survived by three of her devoted sons, Rick Bauer of Cresaptown, Harold Bauer and his wife Harsha of Mooresville, North Carolina, and Morris (Mo) Bauer and his wife Tracey of Long Valley, New Jersey. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Scott Bauer and his wife Brenda of Cresaptown, Dan Bauer and his wife Emily of Cresaptown, Neeta, Ami, Ravi and Aditi Bauer of Mooresville, North Carolina, and Abby, Mikaela and Andrew Bauer of Long Valley, New Jersey and great grandchildren, Jakson, Darian, Cade and Rylee.

The family will receive those wishing to pay their respects at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Monday, February 5, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m.

Memorial services will commence on Tuesday, February 6, 2018 at noon at the funeral home. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
