Cumberland—Arthur F. Friedland, 99, of Cumberland passed away on Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017.
Born in Altoona, Pa., on Sept. 7, 1917, Arthur was the son of the late Maurice and Pauline (Luddeke) Friedland.
Along with his wife Bernice, Arthur owned and operated Tots to Teens children’s clothing store on Centre Street in downtown Cumberland for 38 years and was an active and respected member of the community.
Arthur was a graduate of Altoona High School, class of 1935, and attended Pennsylvania State University. He served in the Army Air Corps as a sergeant during World War II and was stationed in Dodge City, Kansas.
A longtime member of the B’er Chayim Temple in Cumberland, Arthur served as temple president several times and played a variety of leadership roles in the synagogue. An active member of the Downtown Business Association, Arthur was the president of the group and a member of many committees. He was also a member of the American Legion Fort Cumberland Post 113 and the Cumberland Lions Club. Arthur was a member of a breakfast club that met at Mark’s Daily Grind restaurant on Baltimore Street. He was so revered by the members of the group and the staff of the restaurant, that they have a special chair for him with a name plaque placed upon it.
Arthur had a wide circle of friends and was known for his sense of humor and warm, generous spirit. He cherished the time he spent with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and in his retirement years enjoyed being with his many coffee club friends, where he enjoyed elder statesman status.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Alberta Mosler. He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Bernice (Alpert) Friedland; three children, Lynn Magid Lazar and husband Dale, Pittsburgh; Stephen A. Friedland and wife Roberta, Columbia, SC; and Bruce Friedland and wife Marie, Annapolis, MD; grandchildren Jessica Magid and husband Juan Garces, Jeffrey Friedland and wife Rachel, Aaron Magid and wife Sage Briscoe, David Friedland and wife Stefanie, Ethan Magid, Carolyn Friedland, Molly Friedland; step-grandson Brent Lazar and wife Sharifa Anderson; great-grandchildren Alison, Trevor, Isaac, and Adar; step great-grandson Asher; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the B’er Chayim Temple, 107 W Union St, Cumberland, MD 21502 on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 from 10-11 A.M. Funeral services will be conducted at the Temple at 11 A.M. Burial will be in Eastview Cemetery.
Temple members and family and friends are welcome to attend additional services at B’er Chayim Temple downtown on Tuesday and Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
