CUMBERLAND — Deacon Francis L. Werner, Jr., 89, of Cumberland, passed to his heavenly reward Tuesday, December 26, 2017. He was born November 25, 1928.

Frank is the son of the late Francis L. Werner, Sr. and Julia S. Walsh. He was also preceded in death by his brother, James E. Werner, Sr.

Frank was a 1946 graduate of LaSalle High School. He then graduated in 1950 from Mount Saint Mary’s College. He served in the Korean War, Private First Class, U.S. Army, 1950-1952.  Frank worked as a Senior Accountant in the Finance Department of Kelly Springfield Tire Corporation for over 38 years.  He entered the Catholic Church Permanent Diaconate in 1976.  Frank was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 586 and Alhambra Wamba Caravan 89.  Frank enjoyed volunteering for many organizations to include St. Patrick’s Church, the Ray of Hope, the Interfaith Consortium, St. Anthony’s Place, St. Vincent DePaul Society, to name a few.

In addition to serving as a deacon and volunteering, Frank’s favorites included scripture reading, the rosary, chatting with friends, playing cards at the Knights of Columbus, crossword puzzles, and a nightly glass of Merlot wine.  When asked how he was doing, he responded “If I felt any better, I wouldn’t know what to do!”

Surviving are his two sisters, Mary C. Werner of Pensacola, Florida, and Margaret E. Bechie of Chillicothe, OH. His nieces and nephews in Ohio include John Bechie and wife Karen, Frances (Bechie) Reisinger and husband Brett, Mary (Bechie) Maimone and husband Jimmy, and Judi (Bechie) Hunter and husband Chris.  Additional nieces and nephews include Marisa Werner of Tuscon, Arizona, James Werner and wife Sharron, of Edgewater, Maryland, and Mary Werner, of Laurel, Maryland. Frank has numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews. Frank’s cousins include William Walsh of Virginia; James E. Walsh and wife Laurie, and their children, of Cumberland; Betsy (Walsh) Geiger and husband, Rich, and their children, of Cumberland, Weezie (Walsh) Feeney and husband Bill, and their children, of Cumberland, and Mimi (Walsh) Wehberg, and husband Ron, and their children, of Monkton, Maryland.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Friday, January 5, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m.  A Crescent Service led by Alhambra Wamba Caravan 89 will begin at 7:45 p.m. A Christian Wake with the Knights of Columbus Council 586 will be conducted at 8 p.m. followed by the recitation of the rosary.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, 201 North Centre Street, Cumberland, Maryland, on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 10 a.m.

Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.

Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.
