GRANTSVILLE – Doris Gwendolyn Rexrode, 88, of Grantsville, MD, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017, at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, surrounded by her family.

Born January 21, 1929, in Luke, MD, she was the daughter of the late Elwood M. and Cleo C. (Harvey) Wilkins. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Elmer C. Rexrode; two sisters, Elizabeth Blizzard Filsinger and Betty Kyle; and a niece, Karen Rinard Thomas.

She graduated from Bruce High School in 1947 and Frostburg State Teachers College in 1951 with a degree in elementary education. She was an elementary school teacher in Allegany County, MD, and Anchorage, AK, while Elmer was stationed there at Elmendorf Air Force Base. She had taught for 10 years when she decided to be a stay-at-home mom for her daughters.

Doris was a member of the Graceland Baptist Church, where she continued teaching children in Sunday school and VBS. She was a member of the ASSIST team for several years going to conferences held by the Southern Baptist Convention and learned ways to make better teachers. She shared this new knowledge with teachers of churches within the Western Baptist Association. Her love of teaching carried over to missions education and ministry to women as the frequent leader of the WMU. She worked alongside of her husband for several years delivering meals as part of the Graceland Baptist Church meals ministry. After moving to Grantsville, she was not able to attend church, but never stopped thinking of her friends there, and stated often how much she missed them.

Doris will be well remembered for her sense of humor, her great love of teaching, and the telling of endless stories she fondly remembered from her life. Doris loved spending time with her family and the times she and Elmer traveled across the country after his retirement.

She is survived by her daughters, Patricia J. Corley, Cumberland, and Susan D. Hartsock and husband Frederic, Aldie, VA; two grandchildren, Lane G. Hartsock, and Leah S. Hartsock, both of Aldie, VA; as well as several nieces and nephews, one of which was extra special in her heart, Glenn Pfeifer, Atlanta, GA.

To celebrate her life, friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, on Monday, March 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 28, at 11 a.m. with long-time friend and former pastor of Graceland Baptist Church, Pastor Frank Hyder, of Beech Island, SC, and Pastor Dan Twigg, of Graceland Baptist Church, officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Cumberland, MD.
