CUMBERLAND – Eva Ernestine “Teenie” (Cook) Adams, 91, of Cumberland, passed away on Saturday, September 02, 2017 at the Allegany Health, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in Warfieldsburg, MD on July 9, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Donald Cook, Elkins, WV, and Ernestine (Zile-Cook) Hostettler, and step-father, Ivan Hosttetler, Ridgeley, WV. In addition to her parents, Eva was also preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Adams; and her only brother, Jimmy Cook, who died at age 3 of Diphtheria in New Windsor, MD; and great-granddaughter, Julia Hitchens.
Eva spent most of her life in New Windsor, MD, Ridgeley, WV, and Cumberland. She graduated from Ridgeley High School in 1945. After graduation, she went to work at Rosenbaum’s Department Store. It was during this time she met her future husband, Alvin Adams, at Curtis’s Confectionary on Baltimore Street. He had just gotten home from serving in WWII. They were married in 1947, and had many happy years together, until his death in 1993.
Eva also worked as the manager of the Buddy Dale Hat Shop, Montgomery Ward, Peskins, Joe’s Market, and Sanitary Market. She was a member of the Cumberland Eagles. When she went there years ago, they all knew her as “Grandma.” She loved being with younger people, especially her grandson Charley’s friends. She was a life member of Calvary Methodist Church in Ridgeley, but in her later years, attended Memorial Heights Baptist Church. She enjoyed being a member of the “Golden Girls” there, and loved going to lunch with the older single ladies. She also liked the WOM meetings and the Sunrise Lunches. She especially cared for the music and Pastor Chan’s sermons.
She is survived by three daughters, Bonnie Kay Iliff and husband Charley, Ridgeley, WV, Kathy Lynn (Skinner) Shahin, Memphis TN, and Margaret “Peggy” Coghlan and husband John, Ocean City, MD; nine grandchildren, Dawn (Iliff) Mock, Charley Iliff, Scott Iliff, Alexis Skinner, Erika (Skinner) Starkey, Christopher Kreger, Israel Kreger, Matthew Kreger, and Amanda Coghlan; an “adopted” grandson, JD May; eleven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Eva is also survived by sister-in-law, Sara (Adams) Clapper and husband Richard, Collegeville, PA, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A special thanks to all the loving and caring “angels” who took care of Mom while she resided at Allegany Nursing and Rehab. She loved it there, and enjoyed knowing all of you. There were a few who were very special to her (you know who you are). Her family is so very grateful to all of you, and you will always be in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless all of you!
