CUMBERLAND – Evelyn Mae Nicholson, 83, of Cumberland, passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.

Born February 15, 1934, in Garrett County, Maryland, she was the daughter of the late George and Viola (Housel) Durr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 27 years, Paul Nicholson; brothers, Elmer Durr and George Durr; brothers-in-law, Chuck Edmiston and Clarence Lyons; and sisters-in-law, Patsy Durr and Leona Durr.

Evelyn graduated from Grantsville High School in 1952. She then moved to Washington DC and took a position at AT&T for six years before moving to Cumberland. Upon returning to western Maryland, Evelyn began her 30-year career at Memorial Hospital. She worked as a switchboard operator, moved on to a position in admissions, and finally retired after working as a dietician for the hospital.

Evelyn was an active member of the Frostburg Church of the Brethren. In her free time, she enjoyed cross stitching and sewing. She also loved to travel and went on many cruises. After her retirement, Evelyn especially enjoyed dinner dates with her former coworkers.

Surviving Evelyn are her son, Brian Nicholson and wife Brenda, Ft. Ashby, West Virginia; daughter, Sandra Milton and husband Lawrence, Fayetteville, North Carolina; grandchildren, Anthony Milton and wife Jennifer, Hope Mills, North Carolina, and Madison Nicholson; great-grandson, Tyler Milton; sisters, Violet Lyons, Oregon, LeEtta Hawn and husband Hallie, Cumberland, Maryland, Kathleen Berg and husband Bob, Taylor, Michigan, and Janet Edmiston, Cumberland, Maryland; brother, Lawrence Durr, Lexington, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Mildred Durr, Frostburg, Maryland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Frostburg Village, Evelyn’s in-home care sitters, family, friends, and neighbors for the wonderful care they gave to Evelyn.

In accordance with her wishes, Evelyn was cremated. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Saturday, February 3, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted at the funeral home at 12 p.m. with Pastor Mark Durst officiating. Inurnment will be private in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Evelyn’s name be sent to Frostburg Church of the Brethren, 1 Beall Street, Frostburg, Maryland 21532.
