CUMBERLAND – George C. Maguire, Jr., 92, of Cumberland, MD, passed away at his home on Friday, February 10, 2017.
Born in Cumberland, on April 1, 1924, he was the son of the late George C. Maguire, Sr., and Agnes Maguire. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Santiago, of CA.
Mr. Maguire graduated from Keyser High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from the B&O Railroad as a Car Foreman with 42 years of service. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he served on the Finance Committee of the Parish Council for two consecutive terms. He also served as an usher. He was a third-degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus and was a past Cub Master.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Betty Keller Maguire; daughter, Cynthia Wempe and husband Robert, Cumberland; son, James Maguire and wife Marjorie, Jacksonville, FL; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In accordance with his wishes, Mr. Maguire was cremated. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Friday, February 17, at 10 a.m. He will be laid to rest at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
