Janice Lee (Ferrens) Gilmore, 66, of Cumberland, passed away on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at the WMHS Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

Janice was born on May 1, 1951, in Lonaconing, Maryland, the daughter of Lillian E. Ferrens. Janice was preceded in death by her husband of more than 40 years, John B. (“Jack”) Gilmore. In addition to her mother, Janice is survived by her sons J. Timothy Gilmore, Parkton, Maryland, and J. Matthew Gilmore, Cumberland; her three granddaughters, Rory Gilmore, Cumberland; Autumn Gilmore, Parkton and Sydney Gilmore, Parkton; her brothers Larry E. Ferrens and James D. Ferrens; daughters-in-law Jodi S. Gilmore and Stacie M. Gilmore; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Janice graduated from Valley High School in 1969, and in 1972, graduated from the Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, a member of its final graduating class.  Janice would spend the next 45 years of her life dedicated to helping others as a nurse and administrator. Janice spent 30 years as a nurse at Memorial Hospital/Western Maryland Health System.  Janice also served as nurse/office manager for Dr. William Palin, and recently ended her professional career in April 2017, retiring as the regional nursing administrator for Wexford Health Sources.

When Janice wasn’t working, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends, particularly her 3 granddaughters.  Janice enjoyed entertaining at her home, traveling and shopping.  She also enjoyed interior decorating and design.  More than anything else, Janice was a friend to everyone.  She always made time to talk, visit, help, or listen.  Janice treated her friends like family, and will be missed by many.

The Gilmore family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to the providers and nurses at WMHS who provided outstanding care to Janice during her illness, particularly the nurses in the WMHS Schwab Family Cancer Center and the WMHS Intensive Care Unit.  Further, the family is also deeply appreciative of the help and support Janice’s friends provided her over the last year, in particular, her best friend, Linda McKenzie.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, on December 1, from 4 to 8 p.m. A catholic funeral mass will be celebrated on December 2, 2017, at 12 p.m., at the Shrine of SS Peter & Paul, 125 Fayette Street, Cumberland, with Monsignor Paul Byrnes officiating.
