Cumberland—Jeffery L. Athey, 65, of Cumberland passed away on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at his home.

Born in Cumberland on February 21, 1952, he was the son of the late Viola Corbin Athey. In addition to his mother, Jeff was also preceded in death by a niece, Erin M. McKenney; brother-in-law, Jack McKenney; and his dog, Seamus.

Jeff was a graduate of Bishop Walsh High School, class of 1970. He attended Alderson Broadus College, and he graduated from Frostburg State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education. Jeff received his Masters of Science Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University.

Jeff was a teacher at St. Patrick’s Elementary School and St. John Neumann School. He transferred to the Allegany County Public School System where he taught at Gephart Elementary and Braddock Middle Schools. Jeff retired from the Allegany County Public School System in 2014 after a 38 year teaching career.

Jeff was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish (St. Mary’s), the Knights of Columbus Council 586, and the White Oaks Bowling League. He lived a very active life in which his passion was exercise. He went to the gym on a daily basis. He enjoyed playing tennis, softball, bowling, biking the C&O Canal, gardening, traveling, and spending time at his beach home in Rehoboth Beach, DE. He was an avid Notre Dame fan as well as a college and professional sports enthusiast.

Jeff, most of all, will be remembered as a kind, humble, witty, generous, and respectful man who will be greatly missed by all who had the good fortune of knowing him.

Jeff is survived by his sister, Pattie (Athey) McKenney, Cumberland; aunt, Pat (Corbin) Meeks, Cumberland; nephew, John S. McKenney and wife Ericka, Ellerslie; niece, Megan (McKenney) Lucas and husband Aaron, Walkersville, MD; great nephew, Mason Lucas; great niece, Madison McKenney; special friends, Barry Simpson, Leesburg, VA, Robert (Bobby) McKenzie, Ridgeley, WV; and several cousins.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Friday, July 7, 2017 from 4 to 7 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 p.m..

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Shrine of SS Peter & Paul, 125 Fayette Street, Cumberland, on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 10 a.m.

Inurnment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Larry Hanlin, Chris Hanlin, Rick Leichtweis, Barry Hirsch, Roger Cooper, and Chris Barnes.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis TN 38105; to The National Shrine of St. Jude, 205 W Monroe Street, Chicago, IL 60606; to The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins, The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Building Suite 1100, 401 N Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21287; or to the Western Maryland Health System Hospice, 12500 Willowbrook Road, Cumberland, MD 21502.
