CUMBERLAND, MD – Mary Josephine Horwath, 87, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully at the Cumberland Healthcare Center on Monday, October 30, 2017.

Born January 8, 1930, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Chester and Agnes (Maffley) Brant. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a step-mother, Elsie Brant; a brother, Donald Lee Brant; and one son, Michael Joseph Horwath.

Mary was a graduate of Fort Hill High School. She worked, seasonally, for Cumberland Cloak and Suit Store. While raising her children, she served as PTA president at her children’s school. During her long time membership at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, she taught Sunday School and was Education Superintendent. At the time of death, she was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, and a life member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club. She instilled in her children the importance of a Christian upbringing, the value of an education, and the love of reading.

Mary is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Horwath; two daughters, Cathy Horwath Webb and husband Bill, Oldtown, and Patricia Horwath Bailey and husband Jeff, Cumberland; three grandchildren, Rima Allport, New Windsor, MD, Ryan Bailey and wife Leslie, Jersey City, NJ, and Amber Larkin and husband Tyler, Towson, MD; and three great-grandchildren, Terra Miley, Pace Larkin, and Sutton Bailey. In addition, Mary leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.

Mary’s family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Cumberland Healthcare Center, along with the Western Maryland Health System Hospice Services staff.

Friends and family will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Harold R. McClay, Jr. officiating.

Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 336 Race Street, Cumberland, MD 21502.
