CUMBERLAND – Paul Joseph Appel, 89, of Cumberland, formerly of Cresaptown, passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017, at the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center.

Born January 20, 1928, in Little Orleans Crossroads, WV, he was the son of the late John C. and Malesta H. (Martin) Appel. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred H. Chaney; and brothers, Leo F. Appel, Earl F. Appel, John W. Appel, Robert V. Appel, and Carl O. Appel.

Paul served his country in the United States Army during the 1940s. He retired, after 47 years of service as a security and fire safety supervisor, from the Celanese Corporation in Cumberland. Paul was a lifetime member of the Cresaptown Fire Department. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his Rottweilers.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys M. (Hite) Appel; sons, Paul J. “Joe” Appel, Jr., Narvon, PA, and Randy L. Appel, Cresaptown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 15205 McMullen Hwy, Cresaptown, Monday, February 6, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A funeral service will immediately follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
