CUMBERLAND – Raymond J. “Shorty” Brown, Jr., 82, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 16, 2017, with his loving family by his side after a three-year illness.

He was born in Cumberland, MD, on March 30, 1935, to Esther A. Shaw and Raymond J. Brown, Sr. He was raised by his grandparents, Mary Manley and Clinton S. Brown. Raymond is predeceased by his parents and grandparents; his three brothers, Richard, James, and Donald; and son-in-law, Todd H. Butler.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years and high school sweetheart, Pauline R. Reckley; three children, Susan Brown-Butler (fiancé, John Miller), Paul R. Brown, Sr. (Tammy), and Sherri L. Reed (Charles). Raymond had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; Paul, Jr., was very close to his grandfather and was more like a son to him than a grandson. Paul, Jr., was extremely instrumental in Raymond’s care during his illness.

Raymond attended St. Mary’s School and LaSalle High School where he played the position of center on the football team and was elected Player of the Week many times. He then left Cumberland and served in the Air Force for eight years as a Staff Sergeant where he spent some time in Okinawa, Japan. He then joined the Montgomery County, MD, Police Department where he was shot in the line of duty – near fatally. He retired as a Corporal and moved back to his beloved mountains, Flintstone, and then Cumberland. Raymond attended Central Assembly of God Church until he could no longer drive. He was a true outdoorsman; he enjoyed fishing with his son, his brothers, his family, and special friend, Bernie Simpson. He also loved to hunt. He went out west to hunt for many years with his son, Paul, brother, Jim, and special friend, Andy Day. Raymond was a member of the Montgomery County Retired Police Association and the NRA.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Cumberland’s Home Care and Hospice Care. We don’t know what we would have done without these kind and loving people. God Bless them.

In accordance with Raymond’s wishes, his body will be cremated.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Thursday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A memorial service will follow immediately at 12 p.m. Inurnment will be in Hillcrest Burial Park. Military honors will be accorded at the gravesite by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.
