CUMBERLAND – Richard Wesley Stewart, 98, of Cumberland, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017, at the Frostburg Village Nursing Home.
He was born on October 26, 1918, in Lonaconing, Maryland. He was preceded in death by his wife, Willie Mae Stewart; his siblings, Virginia Hare, Mary Brinkman, Helen Smoot, Ruth Clark and Delores Ballou.
Richard was a United States Army Air Force Veteran, serving his country during the World War II Era, stationed in the Pacific. He received medals for his service and was honorably discharged after receiving the rank of Master Sergeant. Known as Dick to many of his friends and co-workers, he retired from Potomac Farms Dairy in 1981 as Union shop steward and Salesman/Driver, servicing the Frostburg area for many years. He was a member of the Downtown Cumberland Businessmen’s Association, the Teamster’s Union and the Trinity United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing and duck pin bowling. Above all, he cherished being with his family, especially his wife of 61 years, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are his daughter, Barbara Smith and husband, Colin; his son, Richard Stewart and wife, Linda; four grandchildren, Erin Watson and husband, Keith, Ryan Smith and wife, Carrie, Christy Spalink and husband, Ben, and Jennifer Bussard and husband, Travis; six great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland, on Thursday, February 2, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
A Funeral Service will be conducted at the funeral home on Friday, February 3, at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ben Spalink officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
Military Honors will be accorded by Post 13 Veteran’s Honor Guard.
