Cumberland—Robert Louis “Bob” Madden, 71, of Cumberland, passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017, at his home.

Born in Cumberland, MD, on September 25, 1946, he was the son of the late Clara (Helmstetter) and Louis Madden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Deborah Ann (Gurtler) Madden; his sister, Barbara Madden; his grandson, Colin Madden; his brothers-in-law, Thomas Rowan and Charles Vaughan.

Bob was a graduate of LaSalle High School, class of 1964.  Following high school, Bob served his electrician’s apprenticeship at the B&O Railroad. He later served his country in the United States Air Force.  After his discharge, Bob returned to the railroad where he was an electrician for the CSX Transportation Company until his retirement in 2002.

Bob was a member of SS Peter and Paul Shrine of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, the IBEW Local #870 Electrical Workers Union where he served as the organization’s past chairman, the Knights of Columbus Cumberland Council #586, Wamba Caravan #89 Order of Alhambra, the Goodfellowship Club, the Cumberland Democrat Club, proud member of the Class of 1964 of LaSalle, where Bob attended the monthly luncheons of the group. He was also an active volunteer and fund raiser for the Allegany County Relay for Life.

Bob could fix anything, and he was always happy to help others with their home improvement projects. He built his own home, and he was a master of woodworking.

Bob is survived by his children, Amy M. Budd and husband Chris, Acworth, GA, and Ryan S. Madden and Andrea Blank, Cumberland; grandchildren, Davis Budd, Katie Budd, Cora Madden, Evan Madden, and Jade Madden; siblings, Anna Vaughan, Rockville, MD, Fr. Benjamin Madden, OFM, cap., Philadelphia, PA, and Thomas Madden and wife Gayle, Vernon, CT; sister-in-law, Sandra Rowan, Columbia, MD; nieces and nephews, Clarellen Zimmerman and husband Joe, James Vaughan and wife Christine, Barbara Yann and husband Scott, Steve Vaughan, Maggie Vaughan, Maura Vaughan, Michael Vaughan, Eileen Turbessi and husband Mark, Kevin Madden and wife Laura, Beth Gallagher and husband Paul, Colleen Lynch and husband Kevin, Doug Rowan and wife Carol, and Wendi Layne and husband Dave. Bob is also survived by many great-nieces and great-nephews, cousins, and many very good friends.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue on Friday, October 20, 2017, from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 10 A.M. at SS Peter and Paul Shrine. The members of the Electrical Workers Union will conduct their memorial service on Friday at 8:45 P.M. The members of the Alhambra will conduct the Crescent Service at 9 P.M., followed by the Christian Wake Service with the members of the K of C participating. His brother, Fr. Ben, will conduct the Christian Wake Service and will be the celebrant at the Mass of Christian Burial. Military Honors will be accorded at SS Peter and Paul Cemetery by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
