Shane David Crawford, 35, of Cumberland, MD died March 17, 2017 as a result of complications of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.  He was born February 15, 1982 in Cumberland, MD, the son of Tonya Passarell.  Shane graduated from Ft. Hill High School in 2000.

Shane is survived by his mother, Tonya Passarell, grandmother, Helen Passarell of Cresaptown; his aunt, Theresa Sutherland and cousins, Craig Muir, Angela Muir; Vanessa, Shane, Olivia and Madison Fabbri; Rick Passarell, Florida, and multiple other cousins and relatives.

Shane now walks in heaven with his grandfather, Mike Passarell, uncle, Rick Passarell; cousin, Nic Muir and great grandparents, Michael and Genevieve Passarell, Marge Hardy; Delbert Tallman.

Shane’s life was an inspiration to everyone that knew him.  Even though Shane’s physical body limited his activity, Shane was never held back by his disability.  In fact, Shane inspired everyone he met to focus on abilities not disabilities –   Shane served as a motivational speaker to local college students conveying this message.  Shane wrote and published poetry and articles that also supported these beliefs.  For a few years, Shane was a part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization serving as a Big Brother.  His hobbies were painting, poetry, writing, reading, watching movies and he was an avid Steelers fan!  Shane’s proudest accomplishment was earning his black belt in self defense from Master Rick Rando.

Through the generosity of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Shane attended Camp Maria in St. Mary’s County for 15 years as a child.  This camp laid the foundation for Shane’s journey in life by providing an environment with no limitations and no barriers.

Shane was surrounded and loved by many special friends too numerous to mention who played a very important role in his life.  Every relationship in Shane’s life was very important to him.

A special thank you to the many healthcare professionals who have touched Shane’s life over the past 30 years including, but not limited to:  Michael Levitas, M.D., Lisa Jenkins, CRNP, Western Maryland Health System and emergency room staff, Allegany County EMT and ambulance personnel, staff and physicians at Johns Hopkins Hospital, trusted nurses Stacey Dawson, Jennifer Vanbelt, Linda Welch, Brooke Cutter, and Steve Matthis.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Central Assembly, 2020 Bedford Street, Cumberland, MD.  Immediately following visitation, a memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m.
