Cumberland—Thomas Lee Elliott, 73, of Cumberland passed away on Saturday June 17, 2017 at home, surrounded by his wife and family.

Born on June 5, 1944 in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Joseph and Myrtle “Myrt” (Powell) Elliott. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Valentine, and Gary Elliott; sister-in-law, Susan Elliott; mother-in-law, Paula (Rueter) Ware; and his best friend’s wife, Diane Higson.

Tom was a graduate of Fort Hill High School, class of 1963.  Following high school, he served his country in the United States Navy for four years. After being discharged, he attended the Police Academy.  He served as a Cumberland City Police Officer for 33 years. Tom was also a school bus driver for the Allegany County Board of Education.  Following his retirement, Tom was employed by Scotty’s Security, and Centerra/FEMA as a security Guard. A Catholic by faith, Tom was also a member of the Cumberland Eagles, Democrat Club, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the North Winds Golf Club. Tom was an avid golfer, Baltimore Ravens Football and Baltimore Orioles Baseball fan. Tom was a member of the Fort Hill F Club, and he supported all the activities of the school.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Jacqueline “Jackie” (Ware) Elliott; daughter, Cristi L. Elliott, Cumberland; sons, Gary L. Elliott, Cumberland, and Sean L. Elliott, Baltimore, MD; grandson, Nathan J. Elliott; granddaughter, Kianna J. York; brothers, Louis Elliott, Nicholasville, Kentucky, Robert Elliott, Cumberland, Ernie Elliott and wife Gina, Cumberland, Richard Elliott, Cumberland; sister, Elizabeth Montgomery and husband Cliff, Rock Hill, SC; special uncle, Jim Powell and wife Shirley, Cumberland; father-in-law, Howard G. Ware, Bedford, PA; sister-in-law, Linda Griffiths and husband John, Bedford, PA; sister-in-law, Gail Smith, Princeton, WV; brother-in-law, Matthew Ware and wife Tina, Cumberland; and special friend who was like Tom’s brother, Tim Higson, Cumberland. Tom is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other members of his extended family.

Jackie would like to extend her gratitude to Tom Bostaph and Dr. Richard Schmitt for their care of Tom during his illness. A special thank you is extended to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center Pulmonary Rehabilitation Unit, and the Hospice Unit for their kind, professional care given to Tom throughout his illness. The nurses, nursing assistants, therapists, and social workers were wonderful to Tom and our entire family.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 from 5-8 P.M.

A funeral service will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at 11 A.M.

Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans’ Cemetery at Rocky Gap. Military Honors will be accorded at the graveside by Ft. Cumberland Post 13 Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Tom’s memory may do so by making contributions to the Fort Hill High School F Club, 500 Greenway Avenue Cumberland, MD 21502.
