CUMBERLAND – Thomas Richard Miller, 83, passed away on September 7, 2017, at the Cumberland Healthcare Center. He was born in Cumberland, on September 11, 1933, to the late Hammond Claude Miller and Minnie Agnes (Adams) Miller. In addition his parents, Thomas was also preceded in death by his cousin, who he considered a brother, Hubert R. “Nook” Davis.
Tom played football for Fort Hill High School and was in the Class of 1951. He learned Morse Code at the age of 18 and went to work as a Telegrapher for the Western Maryland Railroad. Tom went on to serve in the United States Army from 1953 to 1956, working as a Crypto Material Specialist. He then entered government service as a civilian in 1956 and retired from the Pentagon in 1994. Tom was an avid hunter and fisherman in the Oldtown, Maryland area. He truly enjoyed passing on the tradition of outdoor sportsmanship to his sons and grandchildren. He was a member of the East Gate Lodge Number 216 A.F. & A.M.
Tom married Nellie M. Ankeney, from Oldtown, MD, in 1956, and in addition, he is survived by his sons; Garrett R. Miller and wife Rebecca of Bentonville, VA, and their children, Tyler Miller and wife Jacki of Edmond, OK, Garrett Miller of Front Royal, VA, Bryce Miller and wife Jessica of Powhatan, VA; Jeffery W. Miller and wife Laura of Centreville, VA and their children Cash Miller and Suzanne Miller both of Centreville, VA; Kevin C. Miller and wife Petra of Sterling, VA and their children Daniel Simms of Cape Coral, FL, Peter Simms of Sterling, VA and Katlin Claude of Charles County, MD; one brother Lester R. Miller and wife Jane Ann of Oldtown, MD; he is also survived by twelve great grandchildren and an extended family.
Family and friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave, Cumberland, MD, on Sunday, September 10, 2017 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. A masonic service will take place at 4:30 p.m.
A funeral service will be held Monday, September 11, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Charlie Riggleman officiating.
Interment will be in Davis Memorial Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 13 Veterans Honor Guard.
Tom’s family would like to recognize the staff at Cumberland Healthcare Center for their loving care.
