NEW CREEK, WV – Winston J. Shaffer, 91, of New Creek, WVa., passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at the Western Maryland Health System Regional Medical Center, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Born on February 1, 1926, in Piedmont, WVa, he was the son of the late Earl and Lucretia (Reid) Shaffer. He was the last surviving child of six children. In addition to his parents and siblings, Winston was also preceded in death by his son, Rev. Timothy J. Shaffer, and his best friend and brother-in-law, Joseph W. Holderby.

He was a member of St. Mark’s Community Church, Park Street, Cumberland, MD. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, having been a B-25 tail gunner during WWII. He retired from CSX, having been employed by the B & O, C & O, Chessie System, and CSX. After retiring, he helped his brother Rodger run Shaffer Bait and Tackle in Oldtown, MD for eight years.

In addition to his family, he loved old Western movies, watching college football, and rooting for the West Virginia Mountaineers. He also enjoyed the company of his friends at Lifestyle Fitness Center in Keyser, and playing the horses at the Charles Town Races in Charles Town, WV.

Winston is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Patricia (Holderby) Shaffer; children, J.N. Shaffer, Linda Cole and C.J. Schrader, Winston J. II and Brandi Shaffer, and Mary K. and Dean Keller; and the greatest joys of his life, his grandchildren: Patrick W. and Sunny Shaffer, Meghann R. Shaffer, Kaitlin Shaffer, Evie Roberts, and Justice Keller.

A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, February 26, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Mark’s Community Church, Park Street, Cumberland, MD, with Pastor Harold Shaffer officiating.

Inurnment will be at the Maryland State Veteran’s Cemetery, Rocky Gap.
